Recent Supreme Court decisions...

As you know it's been an interesting few days for our country and our future as a nation. As bad as the news can seem it's actually an environment that is ripe for the Gospel. Some of you have asked what I think and how I feel so here are some thoughts that are resting at the top of my spirit today.

First, I am reminded of Paul's words to Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:1-5 where he writes, "I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming (and is now upon us) when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers (and supreme court justices) to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry." Because we believe the Gospel we knew days like this were coming. Jesus calls us to readiness in Matthew 24 and all through the gospels with a clarion grasp of the reality that awaits us and the persevering nature of Gospel truth so let's not be tossed to and fro by every wind of cultural nonsense. In a phrase, keep your head.

Second, what more did you expect? Can we once and for all be done with expecting lost people to act like Christians, think like Christians and stand for the Truth? Can we stop hoping the next politician is going to be different? They are all for sale to the highest bidder which is why Washington is full of lobbyist who are basically retired politicians who know how to gain access to their old friends. It's one big feedback loop of cronyism and it's been going on for years on both sides of the aisle and among Libertarians. Acting, thinking and standing on and for the Truth are our responsibility and privilege so let's fulfill our role and stop waiting for someone to legislate morality. We are the salt and the light so now that it's getting spiritually dim let's get our Light on a lamp stand so it can give light to the whole room. To quote that great theologian Maverick from Top Gun, "This is a target rich environment." Our culture is becoming more like the culture of the Bible with each passing day. Don't think so? Hear these words from Paul to the Christians at Phillipi in 62 A.D., "Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life..." By holding fast to he word of life we are heralding the Good News to this crooked and twisted generation in which we live.

Third, lets be salt and light. It's not time to be known for what we hate as much as for Who we love and why and the practical outworkings of this priority relationship. Yes, we are against sin in all it's forms which includes homosexuality, gluttony, adultery between heterosexual people, fornication (which is sex between unmarried people), gossip, coveting and lying. There, did I cover everybody? My point is that we have got to stop letting the left and irreligious scribblers in the media sell us a bill of goods about how the gay community are actually victims of civil rights injustices and need special treatment and Supreme Court decisions to protect their rights. Sinning is not a sexual or civil right, we all manage to do that on our own accord with no help from anybody or anything. If you look deeper into this issue you see that our nation is trying to do away with the doctrine of total depravity which makes God unnecessary. Soon we will have hermogenous human beings with no sexual orientation, no sinful nature and in need of no redemption. In such a world a God without wrath can only help people without sin reach their ultimate potential by become more self-actualized towards whatever behavior they prefer and then take them into a Kingdom without a King. Beginning to sound familiar?

Finally, we have already begun the process of addressing this issue in our church by-laws and constitution so that no entity can force us to perform same sex unions and none of our facilities can be used for such ceremonies. I'll gladly go to jail for what I believe and look forward to your visits. Bring snacks. This is a great time for us to be fluent in the Gospel!

Keep your head,

Neil
