Growing Closer To Jesus

Growing Closer To Jesus

Our relationship with the Lord is just that, a relationship. Time spent with Him in prayer and in His Word, the Bible, are primary ways to see that relationship grow in intimacy.

In order to give you some very practical examples of how to get started, we asked a few women to share different ways they spend time with the Lord.

This week you’ll hear from one of them.

Confession #1

I hate to get up in the morning. It’s painful. I long to be one of those people who jump out of bed at 5:30 am with a zest for life and energy for the day. (I need lots and lots of coffee). So, although I have seasons when I’m super disciplined and pull myself out of bed in the wee hours of the morning to spend time with Jesus, it doesn’t happen all the time.

Most of the time, after I get the kids off to school, I sit down at the kitchen table with my LARGE cup of coffee, my breakfast and my bible. I like to have a journal with me, so I can jot down notes and observations as I read. I like to pick a book and read all the way through—typically going back and forth between an Old Testament book and a New Testament book…otherwise I’ll spend all my time in the Gospels because I love reading stories about Jesus. (Occasionally, I’ll take a break and read the Psalms and just let them wash over me). This is typically my routine, even when the kids are at home in the summer—it’s not as quiet, and certainly not interruption-free, but I want them to see their mom in the Word.

Confession #2

I’m a worrier. If I’m thinking, I’m usually worrying about something. I try to catch myself and turn my thoughts to prayer about whatever I’m worrying about, rather than just obsessing. When someone pops into my mind, I think there must be a reason! So I take a minute to pray for them.

Getting out and taking a walk when I can is HUGE for my sanity, and is a great time for me to pray, breathe and connect with God. I like to go outside in the back yard at night, after everyone in my house is asleep and talk to Jesus. (Maybe this is why I can’t get up in the morning!!)
