ADVENT

Come Jesus Come

Advent comes from the Latin word adventus which means "coming." When the Church celebrates Advent each year, she makes present this ancient anticipation of the Messiah. As we share in the long preparation for Jesus’ first coming, we renew our desire for his second coming.

While we celebrate and look forward to his Incarnation at the feast of Christmas, we also slow down to pray, fast, and prepare. As the world speeds toward the material and the temporary, the church sits down to say with the prophet John the Baptist: “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

Each week, we will light a candle as a symbol of the hope, peace, joy, and love that are only found in Jesus Christ. We’ll take time to sing the carols of the faith, see fulfillment of the Old Testament promises, and stand in the deliberate tension of waiting for the second coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

During this rich season, we the church pray for the God of hope to fill us with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit we may abound in hope. In this hope we stand. In this hope we pray: Come Jesus, come.
